How well do you know your thyroid?

We received a crash course on our thyroid from Dr. Gloria Gilbère last week. This woman is a wellspring of wisdom and information, and there’s a reason this is the third teleclass I’ve done with her!

Dr. Gloria is a homeopathic doctor, heath journalist, and investigative reporter. She has authored 11 books, including the bestsellers I Was Poisoned By My Body, Pain/Inflammation Matters, and Chemical Cuisine: Do You Really Know What You’re Eating?

Dr. Gloria helped us to see that when thyroid function is poor—usually due to a diet high in sugar, soft drinks, and processed food—it’s generally also low in usable iodine, fat-soluble vitamins, and other nutrients.

And that results in a huge impact on your health, but it’s one we can address! The best way to nutritionally begin to improve thyroid function is by adding vitamin B6 and B12, using natural sea salt, and supplementing with iodine.

She shared some powerful information, and here’s one thing she said that brings this issue into focus for each of us:

If you're human, you’re most certainly iodine deficient!

According to a study of 4,000 patients conducted by Dr. David Brownstein—medical director for the Center of Holistic Medicine and renowned author of several books on hormones, iodine and hypothyroidism—96% of all people tested are iodine deficient!

According to Dr. Gloria, the worst culprit for leeching the iodine out of our body is our food. “If your soil is leeched and you’re not replacing the minerals, if all you’re using is Miracle Grow and fertilizers, you’re depleting the soil.

“Think about our grandparents and great-grandparents. I was raised in Southern California by paternal grandparents. We were on an acre of land in Los Angeles, if you can imagine what that would be worth now.

“We had our own vegetables, chickens, a cow, a goat, and rabbits. That food was nutritious. My grandmother was a midwife and an herbalist. She would never have used chemicals, but most people didn’t use chemicals in the 50s when I was growing up there, or even in the early 60s.

“Nowadays, the soil is depleted, number one. Number two, we’re eating processed food. When the body cannot recognize something you’ve eaten as food, all of that nutrition is sucked out of the thyroid.

“The thyroid, being the master command center, sends the messages to your digestive system, ‘Digest the food. Eliminate the bowel. Eliminate what is in the kidneys.’ So cleansing the liver is phase one.

“When people have compromised detoxification in a specific phase in their liver, it’s because the thyroid isn’t sending the messages. That’s one thing. The other thing is stress. I’m not talking about recreational drugs and alcohol, because a lot of those will do a lot of depletion to everything, including minerals.

“Fluoride is by far the worst culprit. Found in toothpaste and in your water supply, every time your take a shower, brush your teeth or drink form the tap, your body gets a little exposure to fluoride, leeching out good iodine.”
