Today, many still ask about the safety of coconut oil! How safe is it? Well, I’ve been using coconut oil now for 10 years…
Last year during my interview with Bruce Fife, author of The Coconut Oil Miracle, we talked about how coconut oil has suffered from a bad reputation for a number of years.
Since the 1980s, saturated fats have been scrutinized because they tend to raise cholesterol levels and contribute to heart disease.
While coconut oil does have a high amount of saturated fat, it’s actually good fat, which the body responds to and processes very differently than the fats in meat and dairy products.
This makes it a superior and safer alternative to the hydrogenated vegetable oils that make our diets and foods so unhealthy, and which are linked to premature aging, among other common disease conditions.
One of the questions I asked him was: Can you tell us about the connection between coconut oil and weight loss?
Here’s what he said:
Bruce Fife: It’s very helpful. I wrote The Coconut Oil Miracle book, and I have a chapter in there that talks about the metabolic effects and how it stimulates the metabolism.
After it was published, I started getting calls and emails from people saying, “I started adding coconut oil to my diet, and I lost 10, 20, 30, or 40 pounds.” In fact, I received many testimonials from people who had lost weight using this information.
During the middle of the day if I’m feeling tired, down, or sleepy, I’ll take a spoonful of coconut oil. It boosts your energy.
That is one of the benefits of coconut oil and one of the things that’s very different from other oils. When you eat other oils the body puts them into what are called lipoproteins, and they circulate in the body.
If they’re not used immediately for energy, they’re usually packed into storage as body fat. Coconut oil, a medium-chain fatty acid, doesn’t do that. Instead, it goes straight to the liver, which looks at it and says, “This is a great source of fuel.” The liver uses it preferentially as a source of fuel, kind of like a carbohydrate, and starts burning it. It’s during this process that it gives the body a boost of energy.
In fact, it kicks metabolism up a higher notch, so your metabolism is actually running at a faster rate.
Because of this feature of the medium-chain fatty acids, they have been investigated as a means for weight management and treating obesity.
There was a study in which they used medium-chain fatty acids. After a meal, they found that in normal-weight individuals, their metabolism after a meal containing medium-chain fatty acids increased by 48%.
When obese individuals ate the same meal their metabolism increased by 65%. And the more overweight a person was, the more effect the medium-chain fatty acids had in boosting his metabolism, and the more effect it had in helping him lose excess weight.
Another study showed that even after a single meal containing fats with medium-chain fatty acids, metabolism would rise and remain elevated for a full 24 hours. For 24 hours after the meal, metabolism was at a higher rate, burning off calories at an accelerated rate.
If you incorporated coconut oil into your diet, you would burn off more calories, so there would be fewer calories at the end of the day to be converted into body fat.
Researchers at McGill University in Canada stated that if an overweight person replaced all of the oils in their diet that are made with long-chain fatty acids with an oil that was composed of medium-chain fatty acids, they could lose up to 36 pounds a year without changing the diet or going on a diet, eating the same foods, just changing the oils.
