Cut Sugar from Your Diet in 5 Easy Steps

From: Nancy Desjardins

Sure, you can cut sugar out of your diet in a few easy steps, but it's going to take some willpower and determination on your part. However, just knowing that sugar can be toxic to your health and wellness is a good way to get that kick-start to a sugar-free lifestyle!

Did you know that sugar (as most of us know it) is not a natural product? Unless you're eating raw cane sugar, you can pretty much believe that the sugar you're eating is white, refined, and filled with empty calories. Even worse, just about every product you buy in the grocery store (unless you're shopping organic) is loaded with sugars. What's the big deal? Other than the empty calories, which pack on pounds, did you know that sugar can throw your body chemistry out of kilter? How about those mood swings and headaches? Most women blame those on PMS.

However, sugar is often the culprit, as well as being a leading cause of PMS in the first place. Allergies, chronic fatigue, bloating, gas, weight problems and more can be laid right at sugar's doorstep.

So what can you do about it? First, start reading food labels. You'd be surprised that you'll find sugar in places you least expect to find it. For example, take a look at that can of tomato soup in your cupboard. How about your breakfast cereals, even the ones that are supposed to be healthy for you. Sugar is found in supposedly fat free foods, energy bars, sports drinks and yes, your yogurt, which you're eating because you're on a diet. However, did you know that the yogurt you're eating can contain as much as 17 grams of sugar? And you're wondering why you're not losing weight?

Okay, now that you know where to find sugar, let's work on ways to get it out of your diet so that you quit craving it – because, yes, sugar is addictive. Sugar is refined many times between the time it's pressed from cane sugar and ends up on your kitchen table. It gives us a pleasurable rush of endorphins when we eat sugar, which behaves the same way as many drugs.

Here are five easy ways to ditch the sugar and get your body, and your health, back under control:

1.) The first thing you need to do is get rid of those convenient little sugar packets that you carry around in your purse or store in your desk drawer for those cups of coffee you down every morning. While you're at it, toss the bags of refined white sugar, powdered sugar and brown sugar as well.
2.) Go grocery shopping for some wholesome, unprocessed whole foods like nuts, fresh veggie juices and hummus, quinoa and flaxseed. You'd be surprised how yummy you can make your own breakfast cereals, hot or cold, with such natural products.
3.) Dump the processed white stuff – breads, pastas and rice, which are quickly converted into sugar. You don't want that, do you?
4.) Don't fall for the "fat-free" food labels. Some of these products have just as much if not more fat than the 'regular' product. Check the labels! Sure, the fat grams might be reduced a little, but look what they're replacing the fat with for taste – you got it – sugar!
5.) Don't use artificial sweeteners either. They're not especially good for you and are still controversial in relation to their link to various forms of cancer. Besides, if you're going to make an effort to cut sugar from your diet, don't go halfway.

There, that wasn't so hard, was it? Don't make the mistake of trying to quit all the sugar you eat cold turkey. Start gradually – remember, slow and steady wins the race.
