“Who We Are Determines How We See Others”
~John C. Maxwell

blind-spot-john-c-maxwell-leadershipIn his engaging book Winning with People, John C. Maxwell takes an in-depth look at some key principles that can help you achieve victory over yourself and in your relationships.

Here are brief excerpts of two of the principles from his book:

The Lens Principle:

Who we are determines how we see others. This principle says once we get our own act together, we will be able to help others get their acts together. It’s impossible, if I am an unhealthy leader, to have healthy followers. I have to fix myself. We don’t see others as they are; we see others as we are, because each of us has his or her own bent and that colors our view of everything.

What is around us doesn’t determine what we see. What is within us does.

The Mirror Principle:

The first person we must examine is ourselves. People unaware of who they are and what they do often damage relationships with others.

Don’t those two principles make sense?

In order to establish healthy relationships with others, you have to be healthy yourself. This means knowing yourself and working every day to achieve an even healthier and more balanced you.

I’ve established some of my own principles and goals to follow. And, believe me, I constantly have to remind myself that they are both helping to make me a healthier person.

You can get there too by establishing some goals of your own, and I’m here to help you.

Now, I don’t want to burst your new year’s bubble, but let’s be honest here.

You have an opportunity to achieve your goals, but you also need to be real with yourself.

Start by creating goals that are simple, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time bound. That spells smart.

It means establishing goals that are specific and doable. And, equally important, create goals that you have a strong will to achieve. You have to WANT to change for your reasons and not someone else’s.

Don’t sabotage your goals before you even get started.

Find the will to achieve your goals, one small step at a time. If you’re not willing to make sacrifices, then you’re not going to succeed in your goals.

If you’re not willing to put your heart into your efforts to change, then you’re going to find yourself repeating this year’s resolutions again next year.

Part of creating that clear mental image of success is getting to know yourself—not only what you want in the future, but what may be holding you back.

That means taking an honest look at yourself, from the inside out. Letting go of things—issues, people—that don’t serve you well is an important step to achieving the success you can see clearly in your mind.

So, saying NO and starting to put yourself first. That means accepting who you are and what it is you love most, instead of pleasing everybody else.

The comments I hear most often are I want to change, “I want to start putting myself first,” or “What do I want?” Only you can answer that question.

Start by getting personal and honest with yourself.

Ask yourself deeper questions every day. You might be surprised at your answers!  Once you start to have this incredible relationship with yourself, you’ll begin to notice the magic around you.

Here are some powerful questions to ask yourself:

  • How can I achieve what I desire (my goal)
  • What steps can I take today to move forward
•
  • How can I enlist the aid of family and friends to help me achieve my goals

Just stay with the powerful words you’ve created rather than why and when.
